Visiting The Island

When you come or possibly move to Manitoulin Island its a place you want to be. Sometimes you may find it boring but you got to get out there and have fun doing it naturally if there's no celebration on your weekend vacation. Manitoulin Island is a population of 13,000 but in the summerwise it's flexed to 30-35,000 people. It consists of two high schools Manitoulin Secondary school in West Bay, and Wasse-Abin High School in Wikwemikong. Manitoulin Island had seven-eight indian reservations where you can learn there culture and visit the tourist building to see the native designs featuring arts and crafts in a native detail. In the summer time, the weather is perfect...nice and cool, calm and humid. The perfect and most tourist time to go is the long weekend in August. It's filled with noise, laughter, celebrations and most of all good ole' time traditions. Such as the over thirty years of Wikwemikong Competition Powwow that exceed many people and dancers from all over the world especially from Northern Europe, Wesconsin, Michigan, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and others. A powwow is a gathering for natives to take place in and at your intermission anyone can dance, it's the best way to showing others the powwow and a great way for natives to express there traditions and culture. You can have a tradition delight for a native cuisine like indian tocos, scone dogs, wild rice, corn soup, chile, corn dogs, and many more but if your not interest they have the all american food like fries, burgers, sundea's, and more. You can visit the boutiques available on the side of the pow-wow like buying arts and crafts, or buying music and others. Next up, is the festival in Little Current called "Haweater". Make sure you book early for accomadations because it gets full fast all over the Island otherwise if you want to do it all naturally you can go camping and any camping parks available because these two festivals are on the same weekend so there are many other things to do and lots to explore. Hope that you come down and visit the Island.
