Mercati di Traiano (Trajan's Markets) is perhaps my favourite place to visit in Rome not only for its historical and architectural significance but also as a great example of how an ancient building can serve a dual role in modern life. The structure was built in the early 2nd century AD for Emperor Trajan to be today's equivalent of a shopping center (the complex featured 150 shops and offices, selling everything from silks and spices to fresh fish, fruit and flowers). Designed by architect Apollodorus of Damascus, it was considered at one time to be among the wonders of the Classical world. Time has taken its toll and the Markets now show only a hint of their former splendour. First excavations took place in 1828 but the value of the site was not recognized until much later after the convent that had been contructed above it and many medieval houses were demolished. The markets were finally properly excavated in the early 1930s. The structure recently has adapted its dual role of an historical site and a home for exhibits, film performances and the like.

When at St. Peter's don't forget to climb the interior of the dome. Beside enjoying the great views of the Piazza from the flat roof over the Basilica, you'll continue on to an intermediate level where you can look down on the exquisite marble floors below. At this point you are in for some serious climbing in twisted and narrow stair passages that become more and more warped the higher you get. Finally you will reach the lanterna. There you will be in for a real treat and a just reward for your hard work, you will have a spectacullar 360 degree bird's eye view of the city. Breath-taking, both figuratively and literally!
