Although many people think San Francisco is the most beautiful city in the U.S., for me Washington, DC is. Because it has so many lush trees it is often referred to as the city of trees. But the architecture and the residential neighborhoods give it a charm and a beauty that a lot of tourists miss. The problem with visiting the city as a tourist is that you never wander out of the tourist areas so you don't get a taste of the beauty, although I think those areas are wonderful too. To really know the beautiful and the charm of Washington, I suggest you wander off the beaten path and take a look at some of the areas that I like a lot. Here is a list. This is just a start.

Great that you lived in Washington D.C. for three decades! I used to go there as a child because an aunt and uncle and two cousins of mine lived in Alexandria. Also went several times as an adult, but my last visit was nearly 30 years ago.
