as i live in the 1st arrondissement and have previously lived in the 13th, my fave are of course Asian places of all persuasions (meaning Japanese, Thai, Chinese, etc... nothing to do with the customer's personal tastes ;-)
one thai restaurant i can recommend for sure is SukoThai, a wonderful pocket-sized thai place near Place d'Italie. Make sure you make a reservation over the phone - the place is (alas) too popular now and is almost always full, even on Tuesday evenings and such !!!
it is located on rue du père guérin, which is a side street near place d'italie (u need to hit on rue Bobillot, then make a right at the first street on the right, and there you are)
Matsuri is the best kaiten sushi in Paris. it is A LOT more expensive than the regular kaiten sushi (or sushi float) in Japan, so be warned. that said, it's not that bad (about 30-35 euros to be filled).
Matsuri has great food and excellent service, so i would recommend it, both to visitors who are bored of soupe à l'oignon and steak-frites and to Parisians !
it is located on rue Richelieu, which starts behind the Comédie Française theatre (métro station = Palais Royal).
i adore Matsuri, and it's becoming my canteen.
i don't expect that one to be in guidebooks (foreign ones i mean - it has been featured in the Routard for years now), but i may be wrong.
L'auberge Etchegorry is a remarkable Basque restaurant, which is located in a very old house which used to be a cabaret. The setting, the service and the food are as traditional as it gets.
The lunch menu is a VERY good deal, and anyway the food is so filling that going there for dinner is suicidal.
You'll find that quaint (though chic in a very old-fashioned way, so do not wear sneakers or baggy pants when going there) restaurant near Place d'Italie (an alternative métro station would be Gobelins), just across the street from Square Coulebarbe, on the side of Place d'Italie (i promise i WILL upload a map at one pt)
