Fortunately I had been forewarned of this little trick by a friend who had visited Paris and unfortunately been caught out by it. If you go and visit the Sacre Coeur and then walk down the steps and through the gardens, just at the bottom by the gates there are a number of young men loitering around and what they do is come up to you and say hello and naturally you would probably say hello back and in that time, they tie cotton threads around your wrist making a bracelet. When you suddenly notice that you have this bracelet it is too late and a number of them will surround you and demand money. I actually sat on a bench in the gardens and watched them doing it. Because there are quite of few of them it can be quite threatening. The best bet is the walk very purposefully past them and do not stop if they call out to you.
