Toronto Transportation

Transportation: Airport Express
  • Tip Rating:

    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: One way to get to and from the Lester B. Pearson International Airport in Toronto is to take the Airport Express! Sometimes trying to get around in a new city is a confusing task, but not so with this airport shuttle service.

$16.45 CAD each way, the Airport Express shuttle buses are huge, clean, roomy and comfortable. They were *so* comfortable I even decided to skip my flight and return to city centre just so I could ride it again. No kidding.

With a bus en route every half hour you will always have a convenient and stress-free way to get from your hotel to the airport.

    Numerous hotel stops include:
    Westin Harbour Castle
    Fairmont Royal York
    Intercontinental Hotel
    Holiday Inn on King
    Sheraton Centre
    Delta Chelsea Inn
    Bond Place

There is a good chance that your hotel is close to one of these stops.

Even if it's a bit of a distance it still beats the $50 cab fare from the airport to Toronto center.

Transportation: Using Public Transit for the Airport
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Toronto doesn't have a subway stop that goes all the way to the airport but they do have a bus route that runs from the airport to the nearest subway station.

Route 192 bus runs straight to Kipling station on the Bloor-Danforth line. Kipling is the first/last stop on the line so just hop on the next train and know that you are heading into the city.

$2.75 CAD (exact change) onto the bus - apparently there is free transfer off the bus and onto the subway because there was no one charging to switch from the bus to the subway.

    Transportation: TTC Day Pass
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: The TTC Day Pass was the best deal I came across from anything in Toronto. Just $8.50 CAD gave you an unlimited ride pass for:

    2 Adults
1 Adult and up to 5 children
2 Adults and up to 4 children
    1 Single person

This pass made up its worth within 2 hours of discovering the city.

At a normal $2.75 per person/per ride, it is good to figure out how many people you have, your plans for the day and more than likely you will find this to be your best bet.

Transportation: Air Canada - Air Shmanada!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: I really don't like writing a negative tip, but my experience with Air Canada was straight out of a Saturday Night Live sketch.

I have never had to fly somewhere SO close and encounter SO MANY problems.
566 miles as the bird flies from Boston to Toronto. Shouldn't be that big of a problem, right? That's what I thought, until the jolly folks at Air Canada proved otherwise.

Not only was my flight delayed 3 times getting to Toronto due to "mechanical issues"...but then I was delayed at *least* 4 times trying to get BACK to Boston due to "mechanical issues". I realized I wasn't going to get home that night so I rescheduled for the next day.

As I was getting rescheduled the employees called out:

    "We can't find the plane??"
"Where is the crew? They are missing!"
"Do we have any idea when it will be leaving, if at all?"

I was in shock that they would even show their incompetence so loudly in front of a slew of angry customers.

I left that night with a written note on a ripped piece of printer paper as my "new" ticket for the next day and prayed that they would know what what was written on it and that I wouldn't be stuck here for the rest of my life.

    The next day:

"Oh you were on that cancelled flight?"...yes, apparently so.

I stood at the desk for a good 45 minutes trying to check in because not only could the employee not find my new booking, but I was also told that I would probably have to go to another terminal, get some ridiculous receipt from another airline (apprently they were in some cahoots with them) and bring it back so that they could get paid.

    What?

    Nevermind.

    I don't care.

Right before my new flight was about to board, the flights at nearby gates to Baltimore and Detroit were delayed for 1 hour and 1.5 hours respectively, due to...you guessed it:

    Mechanical issues

    3 delays getting to Toronto
    4 delays leaving Toronto
    1 cancellation
    5 incompenent employees...

NEVER HAVING TO FLY AIR CANADA AGAIN: Priceless
