The two places I was most excited to visit on my trip were in Northern Ireland: Derry and Belfast.
It could be my dark side of my character, but cities with a history of political uprisings and strong passion in their beliefs have always intrigued me. |
| | The Bogside Artists The biggest draw in Derry is without a doubt the political murals in the Bogside area of the city.
These murals which color the sides of buildings and homes depict the history and struggle that Northern Ireland has lived with for years.
Please visit http://www.bogsideartists.com/ for more information on these artists and their thought-provoking and haunting murals. |
Derry and Bloody Sunday The Bloody Sunday event also occured in Derry in 1972 when 14 unarmed civilians were killed during a protest.
This is just one of the many events that have checkered Northern Ireland's past along with those still occuring to this day.
It was really an amazing experience for me to visit Derry and to walk along the murals and read the monuments and tributes named for lives lost in their fight.
I don't claim to know all of the history, but visiting this city has always been on my list of places to see in this world and I highly recommend it to anyone for a quiet, sobering experience. | | |
