What a Long Strange Trip

"It's what's for dinner"
La Romana was an excursion during our time in Punta Cana. We all packed into a tiny bus with worn shocks and made our way through the countryside.

This was one of the most memorable drives I have ever taken. We followed a winding, decrepit dirt road through the mountains, stopping for donkeys and wild dogs and the numerous potholes that took up 1/3 of the road.
A bank of the way to La Romana
Every few miles we would pass a home protected with sheets of aluminum and large branches. Families were doing their laundry in buckets and children were sitting by the side of the road waiting to sell fruit and meat.

They would smile as we passed and wave. The road was so desolate I am pretty sure not much traffic made its way through.
We traveled through Higuey on the way as well, which is a bit more built up than the road we traveled through the mountains. Just as in Punta Cana, La Romana had a similar showing of extremes with the poverty and then the beautiful resorts along the ocean.

I am told this is quite typical of many areas in the Caribbean. I personally found the entire island to be beautiful and intruiging. I probably had more fun experiencing the life outside of the resorts than spending time in the sheltered, yet beautiful, beach hotels.

I would love to return one day.
It was one of the most memorable experiences I have had in life thus far.
