With its numerous museums, galleries, theatres, churches, beautiful parks, picturesque streets and squares, where each building has a history behind it, Prague is 1 of the most fascinating cities I’ve ever visited. |
| | Prague History Prague is a large city, bursting with tourists from different parts of the world, with a history that goes back to Neolithic times.
Fortified settlements were first recorded in the 9th century. Primitive centres joined together around the fortresses of Hradchany and Vyshehrad between the 9th and 10th centuries, and from that time onwards the Premyslids made this the most important castle in Bohemia. Prague obtained the city status between 1232 and 1235. Charles IV then made it the capital of the Empire.
Unfortunately, the period between the 16th and the 19th centuries marked a deep decline of Prague. What followed was the economic and industrial development. After WWI Prague was proclaimed the capital of Czechoslovakia, and after the division of the country in 1993, the capital of the Czech Republic.
