Northern Capital of Russia

by el_ruso - last update: Jan 4, 2006

This divinely beautiful 300 y.o. city was the capital of Russian Empire since its founding until 1918. Despite of neglect during Soviet times and siege by the Germans during WW II, it managed to preserve its glory and beauty. This is still one of the most beautiful cities in the world and one of the largest in Europe. The city is located on several islands in the estuary of Neva, and most of the center has preserved architecture of the XVIII and early XIX centuries. The museums, particularly the Hermitage located in the former principal royal palace, are world-renown, and on par with those of Paris, London, Madrid or Italy.
Peterburg is located in the Northeastern extreme of Russia near the Baltic Sea. Climate is never bitterly cold, but it is usually cold and wet, even in summer. If you come in mid-summer you will experience the 'white nights', days when the Sun barely sets. You need a visa to Russia, even if you are from the US, EU or Canada, which also needs to be registered. Also be aware, that aside from a different language, all the signs are written in a different alphabet as well. Expect to pay over $150 for a decent hotel, as there is a lack of decent hotels for low prices. You are unlikely to encounter any crime, if you stick to tourist areas and do not seek to participate in illegal or shady activities.
