Anne Frank became famous after her diary was found and published after the war. She was basically a Jewish teenager whose family was hiding in this house from the Nazis. The house was a wearhouse that belonged to her father and his business partner. There were two other Jewish families that were hiding with them, and their Dutch friends brought them food and news. Unfortunately they were betrayed and sent to the concentration camp, and Anne Frank died just a week before Germany's surrender. Only her father has survived and had her diary published. Now this house is a very popular museum, and Anne Frank became a symbol of resistance against oppression and anti-semitism.

The canal boat tour is de rigeur in Amsterdam, and justifiably so. The boat takes you along the canals around the city center, and you can see most sites of the city this way in just an hour (center of Amsterdam is surprisingly small). Boats depart regularly from a quay in front of the train station, and there is a commentary in Dutch, English, German and Spanish. You will sit on soft benches facing each other, and there are small tables between the benches. The wood frame of the windows of the boats makes it hard to take photos though.

Amsterdam, as much as Venice or Brugge, is known for its canals lined with quaint gabled townhouses. This is the most instantly likeable thing about the city. The townhouses are made out of dark brick typically without any stucco. Gables differ, and some sport very intricate designs. The buildings are separated from the canals by tree-lined alleys that further enhance their appeal.

When you will be on the boat tour, the captain will pause for you to enjoy the view of those bridges. Several ancient humped bridges cross one of the smaller canals here, and they are considered the prettiest and most romantic bridges in the city.

This large church was completed in the end of the XIX century, and is the largest Catholic church in the city. In my opinion it is the most impressive building in the city, but unfortunately its view is marred by the transport interchanges of the train station square.

This is the main public square in Amsterdam full of people. There are several mimes who entertain the kids. The city palace, new church and Tussaud's wax museum are located here. There is also an obelisc to commemorate the war dead.

This church is actually not new at all; it was built in the early XV century. It is now a museum hosting various temporary exhibitions. Nonetheless, it is still used for state occasions, such as coronations. Also, the coffin of De Ruyter, Holland's greatest admiral and war hero, is located in this church.

The actual capital of the Netherlands is The Hague - the queen resides there permanently, and the parliament is located there as well. However, Amsterdam is a ceremonial capital. This large building was built as the city hall in the XVII century when the power and prestige of the Netherlands and Amsterdam were at their historical zenith. It served as a royal palace very briefly when Napoleon appointed his brother Louis as the Dutch king, but he did not like it, abdicated and left. Since then this is the official residence of the royals when they are visiting Amsterdam.

The Maritime museum unfortunately is being renovated right now, but you can still enjoy the view of its star exhibit, the East Indiaman ship "Amsterdam", which is moored in front of the children's museum NEMO. This ship was typical of the vessels that carried cargo from the Orient and the Dutch East Indies and contributed to the wealth and prestige of the Netherlands. This particular ship ran ashore and sunk off the coast of England, but was saved and restored at the end of the XIX century. You will have a chance to see it up close if you take a canal tour.

This building is the most interesting structure of Nieuwmarkt, a somewhat gritty square at the northeastern part of the old city. The building dates to the XV century when it was one of the city's fortified gates. Then it was used as a weighing house, then it was abandoned, and now hosts a cafe. The square itself used to be the market of the adjacent Jewish quarter, but this ended tragically with the events of WW II.
