Saying that a village is 'picturesque' sounds like an old cliche, but in this case it really is. The old town is not just beautiful, but clean, friendly and immaculately maintained as well. The locals are proud of the fact that since the Middle Ages it was a traditional gift to every Portuguese queen!

To get here by train is not very easy. There are regular tours from Lisbon, or you may take a rental car (which is what I did). The latter way of coming here not only gives you flexibility, but allows you to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the highway, as well as wonderful European roads. By car, it is just 1-1.5 hours from Lisbon.

The only real 'sight' is the ancient castle, which now houses a pricey Pousada (hotel). It is located on the Northern edge of the town and is so well-restored that you will feel that you have travelled back in time to the era of the knights and the princesses.

The town is not about the sights, however; it is about style and ambience. No matter how many times you have walked the same street you will never get bored; in fact, you will have a hard time making yourself leave!
