The royal palace of Queluz was built at the end of the XVIII century following the fad of that era to build country palaces: Versailles in France, Petrodvorets in Russia, etc. However, despite its obvious elegance it doesn't come close, and instead shows that by that time the period of prestige and wealth enjoyed by Portugal had long since passed.
Nevertheless it is a worthwhile excursion, particularly as it is located conveniently on the Sintra train line. |
