Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis are plentiful, in good repair, and reasonably priced. The airport is pretty far, and a trip to the center (or Atocha) will cost E30 and up. You can arrange for a shuttle pickup from a hotel, and this will be just over E20.

Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: Madrid has a very extensive subway grid. Subway itself looks similar to the one in Paris. It is clean and efficient, but definitely not fancy. Trains come on average every 5 min, less frequently at night and on weekends. Trains themselves are very clean. Beware that most stations are accessed by stairs, so even though subway technically reaches to the airport, traveling with luggage will be extremely challenging. Buying tickets is very straightforward: there are machines that take change. One ticket costs E1.25, and you can buy several at the same time. Some machines take credit card in case you don't have change.

Getting TO/AROUND: Airport is very nice and modern. It is large with four terminals, so if you have to make a connection, it might take you some time. It can be reached by metro, except for the terminal 4 which is where Iberia is located.

Getting TO/AROUND: Atocha is the main station in Madrid. It is a large building built 100 years ago. Inside the original building was transformed into an amazing tropical forest. It has birds, even turtles, and the result is very nice. This is definitely the nicest train station I have been to. To buy long-distance tickets, you need to arrive sometime early, or you might miss your preferred departure (especially if you are going to the very popular Toledo). You might order tickets online, but you still need to come early to claim them, and BE SURE to write down the LOCALIZADOR code, or they will not have your information. You can check departures and buy tickets at www.renfe.es.

Getting TO/AROUND: Chamartin station is located in the Northern suburbs and is reachable my metro. It is a lot less grand than Atocha, and offers local and medium distance service. Be sure to arrive early to buy tickets. You may check timetables at www.renfe.es.

Getting TO/AROUND: La Sepulvedana has buses to many destinations from Madrid. Their prices are very reasonable, and buses are very comfortable. The terminal is located across from the Principio Pio subway station. It is NOT MARKED. Basically, you cross Paseo de Florida, turn right, pass Hotel Florida, and next building is Sepulvedana. You can check timetables and buy tickets at www.lasepulvedana.es

marielexoteria Mon Nov 12, 2007 14:30 UTC I'm sorry you didn't have a good time in Madrid when it comes to eating, but your to do tips are quite good. | atufft Mon May 7, 2007 20:30 UTC Thanks for the frank information on dining, transportation, and lodging. The newer museums look great... | trvlrtom Mon Apr 30, 2007 23:36 UTC Wow! A VT who doesn't appreciate different dining hours, language on menus, and prices between countries. I've been to Spain many times, and love the food - as long as you don't always eat at cheap joints. Hope your future experiences in Spain are better |
