The Land of Majic Realism

by el_ruso - last update: Aug 4, 2006

The City for the Senses

The city takes a little time to adjust because it so powerfully affects your senses. The intense colors battle the bright rays of the Sun. The humidity and heat soak your shirt. The sounds of the streets turn into a sort of an exotic music rhythm.

The city's most famous son Gabriel Garcia Marquez calls the style of his work 'majic realism'. It is a fitting description for the ambience of this city as well.

The Caribean meets Colombia

The city is about a mix of the vibrant Colombian culture and the gently blue waves of the Caribean sea. The 'Costeña' culture is quite distinct, and one will feel a big change from the more reserved dwellers of the interior highlands. The population is very mixed, with the African and Amerindian ancestry being obviously the dominant.

Tourist Sights

Cartagena is the most popular tourist destination in Colombia, both for the Colombians and the foreigners. The tourist sights per se aim to please a casual visitor, and give a break in walking the old town streets, or visiting the beach.

There is small branch of the Bogota's Museo de Oro, Museum of Inquisition, historic monasteries, Spanish colonial fortifications. But the main attraction are the atmospheric streets of the old city lined with colonial townhouses.
