Torrevieja

by david010 - last update: Mar 7, 2005

My first trip to mainland Spain...

Pictures of Spain
Torrevieja (toro-vie-eca) is situated between the estuary of the Segura river and the Sierra Escalona. It is 41kms from Alicante and 53kms from Murcia. Torrevieja has 20kms of unspoilt coastline and an abundance of cliffs and coves. Many of the homes are used by foreigners as holiday homes and this means that a mix of cultural influences are found. There are also a lot of golfing services and many luxury hotels and residential complexes. A new sport, hotel and golf resort has just been built, only 1 mile from the coast!

The photo is a view from the villa on the Las Ramblas golf resort.
La Zenia Beach

What there is to do...

Torrevieja is an ideal destination because it has a wide range of activities to apeal to anyone. It has beautiful, clean beaches with warm seas, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, Indian and British restaurants as well as two airports close by. In the picture you can see La Zenia, one of Torrevieja's many beautiful beaches. However be warned, mainly on Sundays the beaches around this area can become very crowded due to the large number of Spainards enjoying their day off!
Cartagena
There are numerous street markets in Torrevieja and the surrounding area. The biggest, compromising of 1200 stalls, is found in the New Torrevieja urban area and is held every Friday.

When staying in Torrevieja, Alicante and other surrounding areas I would recommend a trip to Cartagena (pictured). It is a fort town and is now an operating port. It has some of the most exquisite Spanish architecture in southern Spain and has a rich history.

Pros:"Great weather, clean/blue flag beaches"
Cons:"Quite a lot of other European influences and less Spanish culture than other areas"
In A Nutshell:"Great place to get away for a weekend or week. Ideal area for holiday home"
