As anyone who had been to Paris would testify there are a lot of hawkers and street vendors under and around the Eiffel Tower. They can be very annoying after spending half an hour trying to stop them from bothering you, although when you are with friends in can be quite fun at first. Another point is that while we were waiting for the rest of our group my friend has his shopping bag stolen, containing gifts and presents. it wasn't too bad and we replaced much of the stuff but I'm sure anyone would rather avoid it. Like most large cities watch out for thieves.
