Flagstaff is the favourite location to base for a visit to Grand Canyon and the most visited South Rim. We drove from Las Vegas on a May afternoon north through half of Southern Utah to Kanab then South over snowy mountainous terrain - not what we readily associate with Arizona!

The snow of course disappears when you lose altitude again and reach the town - but daily highs around mid 60s in mid May are still a world removed from our stints in Las Vegas and Phoenix in the 90s that this spliced.

Typical small SW USA town with chain diners like Dennys and Wendys, motels like Days Inn and Motel 6, shops like Walmart and some great one offs - see Black Barts

Driving out in the morning towards Grand Canyon South rim proved we hadn't dreamt it all!

• Pros:Relaxed smaller town ideal for Grand Canyon
• Cons:Didn't go to Arizona to see my breath!
• In a nutshell:A short stop but a town you will take to.
