City of contrasts | View of the Metro bridge over the River Dnipro |
Few cities have the same odd mix as Kyiv. It's 2.5 million inhabitants live in a capital of McDonalds and golden domed monasreries, a main street where everything was flattened in the 1940s retreat to leave the occupying Nazis to inherit only some rubble and the Dinamo Stadium which can hold 40,000 souls found in a very tranquil park.
Unfortunately, the situation with state and police corruption is getting worse rather than better it seems, with the return of the Presdient ousted during the Orange Revolution.....plus ca change...... |
| | The Caves Monastery - one of many These golden domed churches have a history which dates back as far as the 11th century, the Caves monastery is built in an area over 29 hectares and is arguably the most must see bit of Kyiv.
The Dormition Cathedral is larely a replica due to damage from WWII |
| Rodina Mat - Nation's Mother |
| | big girl isn't she ? At well over 62 Metres high the Rodina Mat or Nation's Mother, known as the Defence of the Motherland Monument, is a little away form the centre and looks like nothing in the guidebooks - you have to get up close to see how huge this is! |
