Called the 'Athens of the North' with good reason - few would argue that the gamut of architecture ranks with anything up the latitudes from the Greco-Roman Mediterranean. Known for its polluted acrid early industrial past as "Auld Reekie" - which means the same in Icelandic as Reykjavik - the controversial new 1999 parliament building and Frank Lloyd Wright looking Murrayfield stadium straddle a Hard Rock Cafe, below the extinct volcano Arthur's seats as the historic castle above Princes Gardens look down from the Royal Mile. The cobbled old town is host to haunted pubs, and entertaining walking tours revisit the scenes of supernatural horrors as well as the all too real horrors such as Deacon Brodie and the ressurectionists, Burke and Hare. Best visited when the nights are long !
- Pros:Character and spooky charm of old town meet Jenners & HMV
- Cons:Best visited late in the year - scarves & gloves are de rigeur
- In a nutshell:30-something Scot is still discovering the Capital
