Alghero - Where Bari meets Barcelona

by Paisleypaul - last update: Sep 6, 2009

Been 2006 & 2007and back August 2009.......

Alghero old town by the docks
Alghero is well served by cheap airlines to its airport, and the beautiful and engaging old town echoes strong Catalan and pre-unification Italian (Pisan, Genoese, Toscan and Piedmontese) influences.
The hotels are still appearing beachfront in the tower crane congested new town, which reflects Alghero's rising holiday star. The centro storico, which hosts the port rather than the lido, has been historically ring fenced by castellated fortifications for centuries, and so the resort can expand without detriment to history - does not happen elsewhere very often !

Centro Storico

Old town in foreground including the fortified walls facing the dock, much favoured area for the passageata. 0ne killometre and more away, the new town develops like any thriving small city

Land lubbers

This is the view approaching the port of the old town, the Cattedrale at Piazza Duomo being the centred tallest point. To the left is the bell tower of the 14th century San Francesco convent, now San Francesco hotel, the only place to stay in the old town. (See hotel tip)

Pleased to say we'll be going for 8 days at the end of August, straight from 9 days on Rome - expect updates!

Pros:"Peerless old town charm, beach and trip options"
Cons:"Be sure to stay in old town - only one hotel !"
In A Nutshell:"Extremely photogenic, back again..and again......"
