Lesson One: Get Lost the first time i got lost was the first day i arrived. i started out in the morning because i had to send an email to my parents to let them know i wasn't dead or anything. so off i went looking for an internet cafe. well, let me tell you - i stayed on Jecna, which is supposed to be a big main street. i went all the way up and down that street, looking for an internet cafe. nothing. i started going up and down little side streets. still nothing. a couple of hours had passed by then. i was cold and it was starting to snow. i said forget the internet, and decided to try my luck at one of those phone booth thingies. so then i walked around looking for one of those. by the time i found a phone booth, i noticed that directly across the street was an internet cafe! ok - so - emails to the parents all done and finished. now i had to make my way back. where was i again? wait, where did i start out from? uh oh. i pulled out my trusty map, which didn't do a lick of good - and started walking. it took me an hour and a half to get back, and it was dark and snowing hard by then, but i finally found my way. lesson one: to find your way around, go ahead and get lost! |
Lesson Two: Go On Foot after a lovely tour of the castle grounds, i found myself deserted by my tour guide. i had no idea how to get back down to my hotel on beloved Jecna. so i was standing next to this couple, they were irish or something. i heard one of them say, "hey, the tram is up there." so i decided to follow along. the tram schedule was no joke. i could barely understand it. i was able to figure out though that the number 21 tram went down Jecna. so when the number 21 tram came, i hopped on. and i rode, and rode, and rode, all the way through prague to some quiet residential district. ah, i must have went too far. so i got off the tram, and i hopped on a 21 going the opposite way. la la la, i rode and rode and rode - until i noticed we were going past the castle grounds again. where in the world was Jecna?!! so i got off, and jumped back on the 21 going the other way.... and rode and rode and rode. too far - i got off and went back the other way - and well, you see where this is going. finally, when i saw the castle approaching for the fourth time, i decided to just get off the darn tram and start walking. i pulled out my map, oriented myself, and walked. it took me an hour, but i made it back to beloved Jecna and my wonderful bed with the coziest blankets i've ever seen in my life. lesson two: to find your way around, sometimes you have to hoof it! |

Vince | AndreSTGT Wed Feb 1, 2006 19:03 UTC No nightlife tips here? But the accommodation tip is excellent!! | DesertRat Tue Apr 26, 2005 17:18 UTC Yup, English isn't very useful; try to learn some German before the next trip. Works like a charm! Never a problem! Agree with the notion of getting yourself lost and walking. Best possible way to get to know a new city. Been doing it forever. |
