There's no good way to describe this grandest of canyons. We've seen it from both the north and south rims and I never, ever got used to the view. It is so big and beautiful that it's hard to get your head around what you think you're seeing!
Our first trip was to the South Rim in 2001. Sept 11th, 2001, to be exact. We were taking pictures of the sunrise as the tragic events of that day were unfolding, far to the east. While any trip to the canyon is unforgettable, let's just say that ours was a surreal experience that will always be particularly, painfully memorable.
We did the 8-mile rim hike to Hermit's Rest later that day. With all air traffic (including helicopter tours) grounded, the canyon was eerily silent - nothing but the wind in the trees.......
Do it - at least once in your lifetime! |

agapotravel Sat May 3, 2008 15:10 UTC There is nothing like seeing the Grand Canyon up close. We hiked the South Rim, but have never seen the North Rim. I am looking forward to our trip in June! :-) | rexvaughan Sun Jul 15, 2007 23:24 UTC Really helpful tips and wonderful pics. I especially like the full moon ones. I also agree about the rangers. | johngayton Mon Jan 29, 2007 23:56 UTC Yep, definitely 10 out of 10 for the NP rangers - Liberty, Grand Canyon, Little Big Horn, Arches..........everywhere, they were just GREAT - GREAT Ambassadors for your USofA - perhaps whoever is in charge should run for President? | Trekki Fri Sep 9, 2005 22:06 UTC Great page here !
