This motel is closest to the canyon entrance and Visitor Center. 3 miles from Chinle, the adobe structures sit on the site of an old trading post and has a campground nearby. Sorry - I don't have a picture.
Rooms are comfortable, decorated in southwest colors and sand paintings, and have TVs, air conditioning and ceiling fans. It's very quiet at night - good for lounging outside of your room in the patio chairs they provide.
The only downside was the restaurant. It appeared to be cafeteria-style and the offerings looked a little fossilized. We ran into Chinle for a quick bite at the Best Western Canyon de Chelly Inn and while it was fine, we heard that the restaurant at the Holiday Inn was much better. You might give that a shot if staying in the area.
The sale of alcohol is prohibited in the Navaho Nation so there are no "watering holes" in town.
The motel also offers tours of the canyon in heavy, 6-wheel, open-bed trucks (affectionately called "Shake and Bakes") driven by Navajo guides.
Cottonwood Campground (on the same site) is operated by the National Park Service and is strictly first-come, first-served but it's also no-fee. Restrooms and water are available but there's no hookups or showers, and campfires are a no-no.
Unique Qualities: Nice room, pleasant surrounds, and very quiet at night.
