The intro page is where I usually try to offer a brief history - or at least a little interesting background - of a place. Rome? I give up. Its history can fill many volumes and there's something drop-dead-amazing around every corner. Like other world-famous cities, it's expensive, can be on the grubby side and the crowds can be fierce but unlike other cities are the crumbled remains of what was once the center of the most powerful empire on earth. Do some reading before you go!
As a tourist, you'll likely be spending most, if not all, of your time in the central historic district (Centro Storico). This is the Rome of the Caesars - an area that was once walled and contains all of those marvelous sites that are top of everyone's must-see lists. Forum, Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Pantheon, etc. The advent of Christianity added Vatican City and hundreds of exquisite churches to the mix. Throw in a few lovely, peaceful parks, lively piazzas and gorgeous bridges across the Tiber and you'll have exhausted your camera's memory card before you know it.
We had 3 days. We needed 3 years. It's one of those places everyone should see before they die and one we'll hope to see again before we do! Magnifico!
NOTE: I'm placing some tips about customs and other good things to know in my Italy pages (under Customs, and Warnings and Dangers headings) as many apply to more than just Rome. Check those out if interested? |
