The nearly annual plan... | Damn they grow their 'girls' big in Key West |
The weekend after Labor day (leaving on a Thursday usually) a big group of us loads up the car and sets out on the 4-hour drive down to Key West from West Palm Beach. Laughing and enjoying each other's company the entire way down. We hit the (Curry Mansion Inn) Bed & Breakfast's happy hour the moment we get there, gulping down cold beers and rum and cokes beneath the hot September sun. We can get our bags out of the car later. Several drinks later we send the boys for our things, go to our rooms and hop in the shower anticipating a delicious dinner of fresh seafood...
Once we're all dressed we head out for Duvall street towards Mallory Square for the Sunset celebration. Street vendors sell lemonade and freshmade guacamole, we buy some and watch the sun melt into the ocean- this is so gorgeous, please see this before you die.
Once the sun has set we head for dinner at a place like Cafe Sole by rickshaw or Alice's at La te da at the opposite end of Duvall...( Both are so good, I'll write on them soon.)
After dinner we head to a place like WAX or Garden of Eden for more drinks and dancing and then, we stumble back to the B&B for a swim in the pool or to crash....
The next day we usually rent a boat from Mango Pango and set out on our own for the day. We stop at the Publix on the way to the boat rental place and pick up turkey & cheese sub sandwiches, chips, sodas, coronas, etc. for lunch while out at "sea". The boat rental place gives us a map that points us in the direct of the best snorkeling spots and we try and hit all of them.
It's so cool, you're out in the middle of nowhere and you can see baby sharks, sea turtles, all kinds of sealife you never imagined you'd be so up close and personal with.
We usually head back to the B&B around 5-ish, JUST IN TIME for happy hour, then repeat: shower, dress, sunset, dinner, drinking, dancing, swimming/crashing.... it's great.
The next day we spend at the beach doing more snorkeling/sunning and shopping along Duvall... take it easy, that's what you do in Key West. Then it's somehow happy hour again, you get the picture right?..... pure bliss. |

Key West 2005 added to the calendar I am oh so happy to say that plans are in the works once again for our Key West trip 2005. We decided after the hurricane cruise fiasco of 2004 we'd be better off returning the the conch republic.
Marcus has booked us some sort of mammoth 16-passenger boat... at first it seemed we could spread out on it, now it looks like we'll need the room!
Dinner reservations are made: Thursday, Camille's, Friday, Mangoes and Saturday, Cafe Sole. Tips to come...
We'll return to the Curry Mansion thanks to its proximity to Duval, its fabulous happy hour and its nice buffet breakfast with omlettes and all... Rooms are booking up. God I can't wait.
Our boat is reserved through www.boatrentalsofkeywest.com -a 26 footer. Should be a blast!

delsol2009 Tue Sep 8, 2009 15:31 UTC never take the rickshaws, they are cheaters.. | nakedbeachbum1 Sat Jun 9, 2007 22:24 UTC I also stumbled upon the place while traveling alone (get this) as part of my final for a Hemingway course. Garden of Eden?! We'd just read the book. Of course, I had to go up! BLAST and pictures! | pchamlis Tue May 22, 2007 01:04 UTC Last summer's trip to KW was a family one, so we had to skip the Garden of Eden. My daughter (17) was funny, tho.. we passed one of the big "girls" on the street and when I called her up for a "talk", she goes, "I know daddy, they're guys". :) | littlesam1 Wed Aug 30, 2006 20:13 UTC Fun place. I was here about three years ago. |
