Settled in 1772 by the Spanish, San Luis Obispo was an excellent choice with its mild temperatures, an excellent source for water and verdant acreage Father Juniperro Serra built the fifth mission in the chain of 21 California missions...Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.
The mission was built in naturally what would become the city center. Father Serra also built it next to the city's main source of water, the San Luis Creek.
The mission remains sanctified ground and thus continues to serve the Catholic church. I like to go to mass when I am in town or at the very least stop and meditate in the cool interior of the adobe brick building.
The mission is the main jewel of San Luis Obispo and an excellent starting point for your visit to SLO.
There are many shops, restaurants and activities in SLO. It is home to Cal Poly SLO a university with an emphasis on agriculture and engineeering.
