Bora Bora

Sunrise
How does one describe paradise? Bora Bora, that's how.Bora Bora means something like "first born" with its geological age somewhere between 3 & 4 million years old. It measures 38 sq km.

Bora Bora was not included in French protection following the Pomare dynasty. Bora Bora resisted until its annexation in 1888.

Although WWII never reached the shores of Bora Bora the US established a supply base there and over 5,500 men were stationed there. What a place to ride out WWII!
When you land at Motu Mute you will see a lasting contribution...the airport runway.

Most of my California friends look at this picture and comment "what a nice sunset" for in California the sun rises over land and sets over water.

Being "down under" meant for me a whole new orientation for the way the sun travels across the sky. It will always rise in the east and set in the west no matter what hemisphere you are in. In the southern hemisphere, however, the sun appears to move counter-clockwise across the sky. In the northern hemisphere, it appears to go clockwise. After wondering why the sun goes "backwards" down there, we figured it out.

In the southern hemisphere the sun goes through the northern half of the sky, like the Big Dipper does. Watch the Big Dipper for awhile some night and you'll notice that it goes around counter-clockwise. We are just not use to this in the daytime. So it seems peculiar for awhile, but then you get use to it because it makes the day seems much longer.

Our Motu

There is a legend how Motus Piti 'u'u uta & Piti u'u'tai were born.

In the lagoon of the old Atit'a between the hilltops of Pa-oaoa and Matira, it is told that a whale and her calf came into Bora Bora lagoon and circled the island before they realised how shallow the lagoon was. They could not escape and were trapped forever.

Stargazing was on the docket while we were in Bora Bora. I finally saw the "Southern Cross" constellation.

My husband charted a star chart for Bora Bora only problem it was for 11:00AM not PM! No matter we still were able to find what we were looking for.
