Slot Loevestein

Loevestein is a castle and fortress, which falls under the municipality Zaltbommel (Gelderland), and just northwest of the village Poederoijen is located at the end of the Dike Fireplaces in the floodplains of the Waal and the Afgedamde Maas.

Knight Dirc Loef van Horne gave around 1357 ordered the construction of the castle. He used it as a residence from which he could keep raids and illegal toll could raise. After him came the lock into the hands of Mr Holland and was used as a defense against other feudal lords. In the beginning of the Eighty Years War, when the castle was occupied by Spaniards, was commissioned by William of Orange easily taken by the honorary leader Herman de Ruyter. The Spaniards conquered it back once, but then remained State property. Until after the Belgian Revolution was the castle serves as a state prison, the most famous prisoner Hugo de Groot, who after two years left to run using a bookcase. In Staatse got hold of the modern defenses and was used as part of the old fort and the later New Dutch Waterline. The military position was abolished in 1951. From 1925 to 1986 the complex was restored, and currently serves as a national museum and the status of the monument.

The castle consists of building a hall, two corner towers and a gate tower and is surrounded by a moat. The fort is surrounded by two moats and has five bastions. Inside the fort there are several buildings.
