Nijnsel

Nijnsel (Brabant dialect: Nènzûl) is a hamlet in the province of North Brabant, situated in the Bailiwick of 's-Hertogenbosch. Nijnsel is a parish of the municipality of Sint-Oedenrode and has about 2,600 inhabitants.

History

The hamlets Nijnsel and Vressel, on either side of the Dommel lie knew all habitation in prehistoric times. There are archeological remains of the Beaker culture found and also from the Roman period showed traces. There are numerous archaeological monuments, which also remains from the Mesolithic located.

Nijnsel originated as a settlement around a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot, and already in the 15th century was mentioned. The hamlet traditionally belonged to the ancient liberty of Sint-Oedenrode and was like the nearby Vressel Herdgang one, which meant that the tax was collected by one person. After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the chapel was closed. The Catholics used now a barn church in Sint-Oedenrode while the empty chapel since 1731 as a Protestant school, after the hamlets Nijnsel and Vressel in 1728 a petition had sent to the State Council in The Hague to a private school may up. In 1892 the chapel was demolished.

Until the hamlet Nijnsel include the possible remains of castle Ten Houte, which was founded in the 15th century and demolished in the 19th century. They are located near the Houtsestraat.

Nijnsel continued into the twentieth century, a small ribbon development on the old road between Sint-Oedenrode and Lieshout. Later, the development of the village further determined by the construction of both the Catholic church, which was consecrated in 1911, and around a nucleus arose, and by the location in relation to the Veghelseweg-Sonseweg. The biggest change in recent decades, the arrival of a new neighborhood in the 60s-80s and a private business in 1970. In this district were initially small and 'clean' companies admitted. Nijnsel was notorious for the N265 road for years the village into two parts.
