Vaals

Vaals (in their own dialect, the Völser-flat, Vols called) is a town and municipality in the southeast of Limburg. It lies at the State Border of Limburg, just west of the German city of Aachen. It belongs to the municipality of Sittard-Geleen, Echt-Susteren and GulpenWittem the four municipalities in the Netherlands which both Germany and Belgium at borders.

Vaals has an area of ​​23.90 km ² and a population of 9732 (February 1, 2012, source: CBS), distributed over the cores Vaals (8035 inhab. In 2003), Files (1571 inhab. In 2003) and Lemiers (1015 inh . in 2003).

Vaals lies in the valley between the Snowy Mountain in the north and in the south Vaalserberg. The Snow Mountain gets its name from the limestone soil which in summer a remarkably light (white) color displays compared with the surrounding grounds. The highest point of the mainland of the Netherlands, on top of the tourist Vaalserberg (322.5 meters), which is also the border triangle, is located in this municipality. This mountain was formerly Hubertus Mountain.
