Bamberg is a city district (Kreisfreie Stadt) in the northern German state of Bavaria and has 70,004 inhabitants. Bamberg was built on seven hills and situated on the Regnitz just before its confluence with the Main. It is the second largest town in Upper Franconia. The city has the largest preserved historic center of Germany and this is also on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

The most famous building in the historic town is the Romanesque cathedral, where Henry II, the last Ottonian emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, is buried. He was the founder in 1007 of the diocese of Bamberg, which today is an archdiocese.

Bamberg is famous as the seat of one of the leading orchestras in Germany, the Bamberger Symphoniker. This orchestra was founded in 1946 and consisted of musicians from areas in Eastern Europe that the Germans had to leave. It is also known for the particular specialty Rauchbier.
