A Proud People | On the Reunification Express |
The name Vietnam evokes many reactions amongst people around the world. This little Asian country has done much to influence the rest of the world both emotionally and socio- politically over the past 50 years. Perhaps this was the main reason why i wanted to visit so very much. I had always been fascinated by the accounts of the vietnam war. Where places such as Hue, Da Nang, A Shau , Khe Sanh, and the Mekong Delta became household names. It stired up an intrigue within me that to this day has not diminished.
What i came away from Vietnam was a beginning, but by no means complete understanding of the complexity of the vietnamese people. I did obtain a slight understanding as to how they have become the most unconquerable of the last century.
It was interesting to see a prevailing opinion amongst many other travellers in Vietnam, including my own travel partner. They would say that some of their travel experience was marred by the arrogance and rudeness of some vietnamese people.
In all honesty i must admit that many vietnamese are not outwardly joyfull or hospitable as some of their other South East Asian counterparts. At times they can be brash and make you feel like an alien.
At the same time i was very proud to meet these people. A Country which has undergone the most difficult hardships only to generously open its doors for the world to see its outstanding beauty. Yes i do agree that sometimes i was viewed with suspicious eyes, But wouldnt you if for the last 50 years your country had been bombed and destroyed from the very people you are now letting in again
I witnessed a strength of character amonsgt these resourcefull people that i didnt witness anywhere else in South East Asia. The strenght which encompassed all thier society from the peasant farmers to the highest of beaurocrat. It was an unsubmissive spirit that would not back down to anyone. It said "you may be black, white ,yellow, whatever, but you will not walk over us. We invite you to see our beautiful country with generosity but dont expect us to wipe you arses for you. |
