Transportation: Rennes Metro
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: The rennes Metro is very new (last 5 years) and is a quick and easy way to get around the city.

After Lille and Toulouse, Rennes is the third French city to introduce a VAL metro system (short for Véhicule automatique léger). The first line is a north-south route through the city centre. the metro started operating regularly on 16 March 2002.
As a university student is was a great way to get around town. The metro closes fairly late so you can go out till reasonably late then catch the metro home.
It is not as big or confusing as in Paris and is more comfortable ,plus the infrastructure is a lot newer.

Getting TO/AROUND: Probabaly the best way to get to Rennes from Paris is by TGV.

the trip is fast, about 3 hours and very efficient. I have done this route many times and can honestly say its the way to go.

    Transportation: La Gare de Rennes
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: The train station in Rennes is both large and modern for a town the size of Rennes.
it has an abundance of resturants and shops for all your last minute needs.
In the last few years it has also expanded. It is a popular train station because Rennes is the capital of the region and a logical starting point for those who want to travel in the region.

    Transportation: The Bus
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: The buses are very efficent in rennes but have become much less popular since the advent of the rennes metro system.
However it is necessary to take the bus to the outer regions of the cityas the metro is fairly limited in its stops. I ususally live on the outskirts of the city in a place called noyal and i am reuqired to catch the bus.

One piece of advice, always travel with a ticket as the controllers love nothing more than to give you a fine. Even if your a foreigner

great info, Maximillian. We are two adults who will spend 3 days in Rennes or St Malo in September. Interessted in evening activities like theatre, concert, etc. Would Rennes be a beter place for 3 nites than St Malo? Both sound fasciinating to visit.
