Its China-Jim, but not as we know it.... I must admit I only went to Hong Kong because I had some air miles to burn up. It had not been on my list to go to as I didn't think it had much to offer. But, the more I read up on it the more interesting it looked and once I got there I found that there were so many things to see and do that even 5 days wouldn't be enough.
If you are wondering about China but don't have the courage to go then Hong Kong is a good first step. If you've been to China then you'll realise that it is not much like most of China (and at least the locals don't stare at you all the time)
If you are interested to see any vestiges of British rule well there aren't any and if you are going for history well its stacked up in the local history museum. |
| | Lots to do and see Saying that there are lots of things to see and do:
First stop has to be Victoria Peak and probably the best city view in the world. Go early as haze and smog soon appears and can spoil your view.
Take a Star Ferry over to Kowloon and watch the city light up at night. There is a light and laser show every evening at 8pm best viewed from Kowloon
Go Shopping! Boy do they have some shopping malls. Prices are good but not super cheap, get the price of anything specific you are looking for before you go.
See my tips for more details on the above |

| | Further Afield A bus trip will take you out to Stanley, Repluse Bay and Aberdeen along the south coast which is a nice day out. Stanley Market is ok but smaller than I expected.
You can get a ferry or train and bus out to Lantau Island to see the largest outdoor seated bronze Buddah or go to Disneyland.
You can take a day trip or catch the ferry to Macau, fast becoming the Las Vegas of the east. It has a bit of Portugese heritage but I have to say I was a bit dissapointed.
The History museum was very interesting and informative with plenty of old pics of the city and a trip to Kowloon can take you to one of the old Hakka walled villages and meet the old ladies who still wear their tradiotnal costumes.
There were lots of other things I never got the chance to do so I can see myself going back there on a stopover for 3 or 4 more days of exploring. Its very cheap and easy to get around, most signs are in English and people are willing to help if you look lost. |
