New Mexico

The mother of all sunsets -Albuquerque
New Mexico is often overlooked as a vacation destination because of the more famous sights in Arizona such as the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. However you can spend a good 2 week vacation here as there is lots to do.

The largest city is Albuquerque, famous for its balloon festival in October. There is not a huge amount to do here but a trip up the Sandria mountains by cablecar for panoramic views of the city is a must.

New Mexico has a lot of Native American Indian culture. There are ruins at Chaco Canyon, Aztec ruins national monument and Bandalier National monument to name a few.

Santa Fe and Taos

In the north of the state you can visit Santa Fe and Taos. State Capital Sante Fe is a bit touristy now but has a unique charm with its well preserved pueblo style builings. Taos is probably what Sante Fe was like before its discovery. There is an interesting working indian pueblo nearby too.

Also in the area is Los Alamos where the first atom bomb was developed.

To the south of the state are the world famous Carlsbad Caverns, the infamous UFO site of Roswell and the white sands national monument.

There is the interestingly named town of Truth or Consequences, named in the 1950's after a game show!

The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, Chama take this scenic 64-mile ride from Chama to Antonito, Colorado over 10,015-foot Cumbres Pass.

See the amazing geological formation of ship rock standing proud in the surrounding flat desert.
