It's is considered that Carcassonne is divided into two very different parts, the new and the old. And they are quite far from each other and separated by a river Aude.
The old city is called La Cité or fortified city. It's a walled medieval city that attracts the attention of the visitors (main and second pics). There are some interesting spots inside such as the castle or the Basilique St.-Nazaire et St.-Celse (third pic). There are hotels, restaurants and shops too.
Regarding the new city, I can't say too much about it since I didn't visit it although I'm sure there are some places that deserve a visit (according to my theory, all destinations deseve it).
