""Selamat Datang" - WELCOME in the Malay language" rossjag's Profile

Selamat Datang Hello! A bit about me :) I live and work in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia .... and love the sights and sounds, and people I meet in all my travels.

Where is Malaysia? It's in South East Asia, 7 degrees north of the Equator, with neighbours Thailand to the north and Singapore to the south. Malaysia is made up of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak .

More "hard" facts on Malaysia? Visit Malaysia. Here, you'll also find the map of Malaysia and its location within South East Asia (SEA)

"Softer" information !! Visit Fascinating Malaysia . Off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia is Tioman Island
Some time ago we'd changed our spelling of "ch" to "c" eg if you're searching for "Tasik Cini", you might also want to try "Tasik Chini".

What's special about Malaysia? Its cultural diversity. Besides the local Malays and the native groups, the Chinese and Indians have contributed to the multiracial composition of its population. Colonial rules by the British, Portuguese and Dutch also contributed to the unique blend of socio-cultural activities, traditions, dressing, languages and food. Hhhmmmm ... Wonderful.....

Its people? Warm, charming, extremely hospitable - - - most times! as there's a handful that you'd like to catch hold of and give them a good shake !!

Its attractions? Lush tropical greenery and wooded mountain ridges, stretches and stretches of beaches - of Malaysia's 1,007 islands, 38 have been declared as marine parks, ideal for snorkeling, swimming, windsurfing - unique arts and crafts, architecture, shopping, food .... sigh..

Its weather? Tropical: hot, humid, hovering around 28-32C. Brilliant thunderstorms. Almost equal hours of day and night throughout the year.

Its currency? The Ringgit (RM). If you hail from Europe, the rate's unbelievable!! approximates....
1 GBP = RM 6.61
1 Euro = RM 4.45
1 USD = RM 3.77
You can get a large Pizza Hut pizza (12" or 30cm) for RM25; a Big Mac for RM5 (or Big Mac with fries and coke for RM7.25) ! :)

We were in Kuantan in mid-December, 2005. Despite this being the monsoon season in the east coast of Malaysia, we had 3 glorious sun-shiny days and enjoyed beach activities. The Hyatt Regency (where we stayed) is situated at Teluk Cempedak, located just 5km from Kuantan town. Teluk Cempedak is an enclosed bay, and at weekends - is a favourite among the locals. McDonald's is the hotel's neighbour !

This is the beachfront at Hyatt Regency, Kuantan. The day started off bright and clear..... and this was taken in the evening. Beach was deserted as it was a weekday.

In the late evening ... Storm brewing ...

Notice at the left-hand side of the picture? Heavy rain at the horizon? It was mesmerising - watching Nature at work !

Storm approaching ... It poured after this picture was taken - and it rained half the night !

The morning after... Sunrise; unfortunately blocked by the clouds. Picture taken from the hotel.

more to come ..... still under construction.... :D
