There are numerous mosques in Kazan, some over 100 yaers old. Many are on the spit of land west of Nizhny Kaban. The Hay Market mosque (Mechet na Sennom Rynke) on Kirova ulitsa dates from 1849; the nearby Soltanov mosque (Mechet Soltanov) was built in 1868. Naturally, the architectural regulations of the time also affected the construction of Kazan's stone mosques from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, which were built, as a rule, where old wooden mosques had been standing before. They demonstrate a surprising variety of architecture.

One more building that beautifies the city is the mosque Kul-Sharif. Its construction began in 1996 on the territory of the Kazan Kremlin according to the project of a group of architects from the firm “Tatinvestgrazhdanproject”. The complex of the mosque is symmetrically arranged. The building of the mosque itself is in the middle of the yard and on each side of it there are 2 pavilions. The complex of the mosque includes the mosque itself, museum-library, publishing house and imam administration. In Kazan one may observe not only construction of new modern buildings, such as “Basket-Hall”, but also reconstruction of such well-known objects of Kazan as Opera and Ballet Theatre, the hotels “Sovet” and “Kazan”, Kekin’s house and others.

Just west of the kremlin is the 16th century St John the Baptist Cathedral & Monastery. (Sobor i Monastyr Ionanna Krestitelya). It is often open and members of the small congregation will be happy to share their travails trying to restore the place. The colourful twin-towered SS Peter & Paul Cathedral (Petropavlovsky Sobor) is on Musy Dzhalilya St. (ulitsa Musy Dzhalilya), between ulitsa Kremlyovskaya and ulitsa Profsoyuznaya. Built in honour of Tsar Peter I after he visited Kazan in 1722, this Russian baroque cathedral has a heavily decorated façade. It is open 7 am to 7 pm daily except from 1.30 pm to 3 pm, when the floors are scrubbed.
