Kazan; Tatar Heritage & Russian Beauty

What Kazan is?

Kazan is a capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. The city was founded in the XI century on the picturesque bank of the Volga River(The Largest European Rivers). Now it has the population of more than 1,1 mln. people. Kazan is one of the oldest cultural, scientific, trading and industrial centres of Russia.

Kazan always struck a balance between Europe and Asia: the life-style of a provincial capital combined with the traditional mode of existence, resulted in a fascinating synthesis unique to Kazan.

Kazan is the city of students. there are twenty universities and higher educational institutions, 5 state theaters, including Opera and Ballet, Tatar and Russian Drama, Conservatory, etc.

Kazan is the city of beautiful architecture. The ancient kremlin, churches, mosques, original buildings - all this forms the unique appearance of kazan.

Kazan has a significant historical and cultural heritage – Lenin studied at the university here and was expelled for revolutionary activity in 1887; Tolstoy spent part of his youth here; and feted singer Fyodor Shaliapin ...

Kazan is an old city , the history of Kazan goes back a long time. Historians, anthropologists, and archeologists have always been interested in Kazan for this reason.

Only an hour's flight from Moscow, Kazan is in many ways more than just a typical provincial Russian city.

How to Get There?
Directly to Kazan
There there are right international flights to Kazan, from Germany (Frankfurt, Lufthanza air company). But it turned out to be a little bit more expensive than to fly via Moscow. You can also get to Kazan from Turkey (Istanbul, Antalya, IDF air company).

Via Moscow
You can get to Kazan from Moscow by plane (from Domodedovo airport) flights depart on a daily basis. The flight lasts one hour. Or by train (from Kazanskiy railway station). It takes about 12 hours to get to Kazan from Moscow by train (it's a sleeper). The most convenient train is called "Tatarstan".

Trains between Moscow and Kazan are frequent and depart from Kazansky Station near metro Komsomolskaya. A second class (kupe) one way ticket costs between 700 and 1000 rubles, depending on the train. Travel time is between 12 and 15 hours. Tickets can be bought at the station, though we recommend paying a small surcharge to buy them at a railway ticket office in the metro, as customer service in Kazansky Station is execrable.

Flight tickets Moscow-Kazan-Moscow - from US$ 150, train tickets - from US$ 75.

Average Cost:

Average tuition fees for different forms of study in Kazan are 1500 $ per year

Apartment rental in Kazan city (one-bedroom+kitchen+facilities) min $130 per year.

Obligatory medical insurance - $ 150 per year.

Some tips for arranging student exchanges:

1) Choose the university that has already some links abroad, otherwise it will be too difficult for them to establish a link with your university and to arrange visa support.

2) Make it clear you're going to pay for everything by yourself, otherwise no one will accept you. Your tuition fees may be paid by the university you're applying to, but only if there's reciprocation on the side of your university as well for their students.

3) It's good to have a person in Russia, who can visit the international office of a university in person and ask all necessary questions; it can often prove very difficult to get in touch with university officials by phone, even harder by e-mail.

4) Exchange arrangements in terms of cost tend to favor European students. Such arrangements can result in American students, especially those at private universities, to pay more than necessary for their experience in Russia.

Searching in Russian (or about Russia)

To start browsing the Russian internet, try the most popular Russian search engines and portals: Rambler (www.rambler.ru) and Yandex (www.yandex.ru). Both have a part of their catalogue in English, but not completely. Also the best search engine in the world - Google (www.google.com.ru) gives quite good results for search in Russian (or about Russia).

To succeed as an independent student, you will need to be a strongly-motivated self starter, well-organised, focused and determined. Independent study demands that you take a full and active responsibility for organizing your own programme of work and for pacing yourself.

If you intend to obtain your degree in the minimum registration period you should be prepared to devote over 20 hours per week on a regular basis to your studies. Support from your family, friends and colleagues is vitally important to your eventual success.
