Avis car hire and other Malta Transportation Tips

Getting TO/AROUND: We booked an Avis car on the internet befor we went to Malta because we wanted to be sure to have a car on New years eve to go to Valletta. Our booking said the same as my photo of the door they closed at 18-30 and we should pick the car up at 17-30.
We got there at 17-30 only to find the office in the Hilton locked up the gentleman at the desk said she came back at 16-30 to check for messages and left. On the 2nd of Jan she told us she knew we would be there at 17-30 but she had a party to go to, she then said why didn't we ring the head office and pick a car up off the security man, we did call and he told us he couldn't help us she then said why didn't we ring the airport and go get a car from there we did ring the airport but like the security man told us they will have gone even though it should be maned 24 hours a day he was right they had gone. Only after all this did she say you can have your money back when you get home I asked if she could give me New years eve back she then talked to me like an idiot. I am still waiting for an appology!
What a load of old *** Avis are.

Getting TO/AROUND: I booked to fly to Malta on Boxing day and to return on the 2nd of January.
Air malta took off that plane and offered me the 5th to return now because I wanted to come home on the 2nd I paid a lot of money the flight on the 5th was £200.00 cheeper but I got no refund so I found a flight on the 4th and this would be better for me but I was told I would have to be upgraded to club class and Airmalta has a policy not to upgrade people I explained the club class ticket was still almost £50.00 cheeper than what I had already paid and they said it doesn't matter the policy was no upgrades and that flight was not going to be offered to me.
Beware readers Airmalta even when at fault will do nothing to help because as I have been told it is the policy, customer service must mean very little to them I am so disapointed I have flown with airmalta a lot of times and they have realy screwed me over for no apparent reason.

Getting TO/AROUND: The buses in Malta are great, they are cheap as chips, very rarely have doors, sometimes no windows, they are real bone shakers, and the drivers go like the clappers.
It is a Maltese experiance people shouldn't miss.

Getting TO/AROUND: The Sliema Valletta ferry is quite quick cheep, and runs every 15 minutes.
The photo is a sunset taken from the ferry looking towards Sliema.

Getting TO/AROUND: This is a photo of the ferry port at Valletta in the photo is an old police station by the waters edge it is a cafe now just to the left of it is the tunnel you walk under to get to Valletta it is a steep bank and it is quite a long way up to Republic st, it is better to get the ferry back to Sliema then you only have to walk down hill.

Getting TO/AROUND: We got a Britishjet.com flight to Malta and it shuddered, groaned and banged all the way to Malta what made it worse for me is my seat moved but it felt like it was ridgid and the emergency exit door was moving.
It was a bad sign when we had to enter through the bum hole, any way it somehow managed to get to Malta coming home was ok.

Getting TO/AROUND: If you can, go club class, it was fantastic the food is great (I never thought I would write that about airline food) and we had our bags first and we borded seperatly so no pushing and shoving all in all no stress transport.
Well worth that little extra.
Oh and I got my moneys worth out of the free drinks and chocolate muffins even at 4 in the morning I hit the brandys big time.

Getting TO/AROUND: This tip is for smokers I am not a smoker but Ian is on our last trip to Malta we got delayed in Manchester airport for 4 hours so when we should have been in our hotel we still were waiting in England Ian had waited 6 hours in the airport then had over 3 hours on a flight then we had to get out of Luqa befor he had a fag.
Coming back was so much better thanks to the lovely thoughtful people at Luqa they still have a smoking area outside on a balcony that made the trip home so much better. Why can't British airports be this accommodating?
