I live in Los Angeles, which I have a love / hate relationship with. I love the culture, sun, and proximity to the beach, but I hate the traffic and crowds! I was born and raised in Southern California and have spent many lazy days at the beach. If you come to LA, I would recommend staying close to the Westside, like Santa Monica. Come to Hollywood if you must, but be prepared for an experience that's not too glamorous. Beverly Hills and West Hollywood usually have some good star-sighting places, and the Fairfax / Melrose area has some fun shopping. Check out the Getty or LACMA if you're craving a museum trip. If you like to hike, there are some nice trails around Mulholland / Coldwater Canyon and Runyon Canyon, or head to Malibu or the South Bay for the beaches. I would avoid downtown, it's mostly just dirty and industrial, although there are some good restaurants, and theater venues.
