"Skiing Bulgaria" Bulgaria by gib157

Last year in the middle of my college studies my friend tim rang me up and asked if I wanted to go skiing in a weeks time because he had found a really cheap deal to Bulgaria and so a week later 4 of us were there. I love last minute trips like this and we were all so desperate to ski. Once you've been skiing once you will want to go again and again.
We, like most people I presume, knew nothing about Bulgaria, especially its ski resorts but we went on a few websites and saw how beautiful the forests were and the ski runs looked like they would suit us well as were not novices but far from experienced.
We flew into the town of Plovdiv and the airport is so Soviet looking with machine gun armed-guards everywhere. The bus trip to Pamporovo went through beautiful mountain scnenery growing higher ang higher but also through many poverty stricken villages and towns that were reminiscent of Eastern European, war -torn photos you see on TV. Bulgaria is a poor country generally and have a lot of coal factories pumping out dangerous amissions but its the only way most locals can work. Food, drinks and mostly everything is so cheap that skiing in Bulgaria works out as a surprisingly cheap trip compared to Italy or Austria where I've been before.
