World's most livable city Rising property prices have caused Melbourne to become one of the least affordable cities in the world. However, only 3 years ago it was named the world's most livable city and it's easy to see why. Situated around Port Phillip Bay and on the banks of the Yarra River, Melbourne is Australia's performing arts, live music and sporting hub. Couple this with fantastic weather, great parks, cafes, restaurants and bars and you have the perfect city to spend time in! |
| | Sporting capital The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG or simply "the G") is sacred to Melbournians - not only was the first ever official test cricket match played there but it's also the home of Australian Rules Football (AFL) - the most popular sport in Victoria. The AFL Grand Final is played here every year, as is the Boxing Day Test (cricket). Other big sporting events in Melbourne include the Melbourne Cup (a horse race on the first Tuesday in November each year which "stops the nation"), the Australian Open (tennis) and the Australian Formular One Grand Prix. Soccer and Rugby League also play their part in Melbourne, although neither are as popular as AFL. |
| | Lose yourself The central business district (CBD) of Melbourne is essentially a grid with a myriad of alleys and laneways leading every which way. Do yourself a favour and just lose yourself amongst them because you'll never know what you will find around the corner. Don't let first impressions ruin things for you either - head down a rubbish-strewn alley and you'll find yourself at a funky bar, stroll down a lane covered in graffiti and you'll hit an art gallery or a cute cafe. |
