the S.Maria Maggiore basilica has a great variety of architectural styles in its interior, since it was built in the 5th century and it had several parts added during Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque periods. It’s certainly one of the most decorated churces in Rome. Its gilded ceiling is said to bear the first gold brought back by Columbus from America.

On top of the ramp (the Cordonata) are the statues of Castor and Pollux, the protectors of Rome, and in the middle of the square is a bronze equestrian statue of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, dating from the 2nd century AD.

Want to see an incredible ceiling but haven’t got time to go and visit the Vatican Museums? Check out this church, you won’t regret it. Andrea Pozzo painted a glorious ceiling ot celebrate St. Ignatius and the Jesuit order. The church hasn’t got a real dome, but an illusionistic one was painted instead.
