Nijmegen was founded some 2000 years ago by Emperor Traian of the Romans, as a camp to protect the border of the Roman Empire. Charles the Great (Charlemagne) also lived in the city for quite some time.
Nijmegen is a city of about 150.000 inhabitants.
Nijmegen, the largest town in Gelderland with a Roman Catholic University, lies in the south of the province, only 7km from the German frontier on the left bank of the Waal, the southern branch of the Rhine as it approaches the sea.
It is dominated by seven hills and terraced slopes. |
| | Nijmeegse vierdaagse Nijmeegse vierdaagse for 2007 start on 17 July to 20 July. This walk is for everyone and you have to register in advance even month in advance too. The organizers will have free concerts, fairs, kiddie rides, performing acrobats and beers for everyone to enjoy. |
On the train ride from Winterswijk to Nijmegen the train driver made an announcement. Next stop Pearl of Netherlands. My friend was smiling and said yeah I agree Nijmegen is the Pearl of Netherlands. |
