The Long road in

Puertas de Tierra
Driving into Cadiz you leave what can be termed the mainland at San Fernando and follow the road along a narrow sliver of land with the railway on your right and beaches on your left. Drive through the New city with its tall modern buildings and reach the entrance to the old city. This is the Puertas de Tierra, the land gates, part of the old cities fortifications. Through the gates past an impresive building on the left which we found out later to be a prison, past the Cathedral on your right, there is a handy underground car park.
Cathedral from sea wall

Cathedral

The problem with a day trip anywhere is that you always miss more than you see. So I would certainly return to Cadiz and try to do it more justice and at a more leasurely pace. The Cathedral is a must though. It is an imposing building with a beautiful front overlooking a plaza where people pass the time of day. Inside the condition looks a little worrying as nets are hung above to protect against falling masonry, the condition of which is quite poor in places. The crypt is worth a look its domed ceiling creates an awesome echo as you walk through.

Plaza de Sn Juan de Dios

Impressive plaza containing many buildings of interest, the large town hall taking centre stage built in the late1700's. Attached to this is the church and hospital of San Juan de Dios after which I presume gives its name to the square.
