So rural, yet close to London.

by planxty - last update: Jun 27, 2007

A beautiful historic village.

Eynsford village sign, Kent, England.
I first visited Eynsford in Kent last month for the purpose of visiting the Lullingstone Roman Villa. Walking into the village, I was struck at how pleasantly rural it was, considering the short train journey time from central London. It boasts a Norman church, several very old, atmospheric pubs, a ruined castle and even that most pleasant of sights, a ford (see photo below). Being in midwinter, I didn't get to see everything I wanted that day but so entranced was I by the place that I returned the next week to see the remainder.

For anyone living in London, it makes a perfect day trip, and I thoroughly recommend it.
Ford, Eynsford, Kent, England.

The ford.

This is the ford over the river Darent for which the village was presumably named. If you are on foot or bike, use the bridge, if you are in a large vehicle, just drive through the river - beware of ducks!

The sign on the far side exhorts drivers to test their brakes, sound advice I feel.
Cattle, Eynsford, Kent, England.

Some unusual residents.

I spotted these beasts grazing contentedly in a field near the ford. I thought you could only expect to see these in the Highlands of Scotland.

They have those deer in Bluewater over Christmas covered in Christmas lights. I didn't know it was a Kent tradition. Cheers!

You've been busy page building I see! Think I've seen a couple of those deer in Sussex somewhere too. We were at The Boogaloo in the Archway Rd last night... do you know it?
