"I simply had to go." Great Cumbrae Island by planxty

Great Cumbrae Island Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 22 photos

A great island in all senses of the word.

I don't get to Scotland anywhere near as much as I would like to and then it is normally to Glasgow or Edinburgh. I would normally not have occasion to visit the small seaside town of Largs although I did so for the wedding of two dear friends and had a wonderful time.

When the usual Scottish mist, rain and everything else lifted (this was the summer after all) I could see an island which I was told was Great Cumbrae and my delightful hosts where I was staying told me I really should visit if I got a chance and a break in the weather. I resolved to do just that and settled down to wait for some sunshine. Sunshine might be stretching a point but one day when the weather was not too evil, I jumped on the ferry, took off and had a wonderful day on a fascinating place with rather a lot of history and some typically friendly Scots hospitality.

If you are in the area, I suggest you do the same.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Lots of history, friendly hospitality.
  • Cons:The Scottish weather, what else!
  • In a nutshell:Well worth a daytrip.
