Ask away. | Docklands, London, England. |
UPDATE May 2009. In an attempt to make my London pages more area specific, I am in the process of splitting them up into the various areas of London. Therefore, you may also wish to look at my Bethnal Green, Eltham, Greenwich, Hampstead, Highbury, Holborn Mile End, and Stepney tips. For something slightly further afield but still within Greater London, perhaps Richmond might be of interest to you. Please bear with me as the VT system does not allow for all the areas I would like to include so, for example, you will find Wapping tips in Stepney and Islington tips in Highbury. I am talking to the VT staff at present about trying to rectify this situation. This is not really so much a report of a trip, but more an insiders guide. I have lived in London for the past 21 years, and I love the place. Sure it's noisy and polluted and there is street crime and all the other things that go with a modern city, but against that, there are more things to do than you could ever manage in three lifetimes. If you have any questions about London, feel free to get in touch with me, and I'll do my best to answer them. As someone once said, "If I don't know the answer, I know a man that does!" |
| Tower Bridge by night, London, UK. |
| | An update. As the late Sandy Denny used to sing so beautifully, "Who knows where the time goes?" I am just revisiting this page and find that I have been on VT for over four years now. In that time, I have travelled, taken some photos, made some tips on VT, although not as many as I should have done, and generally got older, as do we all.
Having said all that, the offer I made in the previous chapter still stands. I have lived in London for over 21 years now and whilst not a true Londoner in the sense of having been born here, I do know the place fairly well. If you have any queries about this amazing city, please do get in touch. If I do not know the answer myself, I can guarantee that I will know someone who does!
The photo is a night shot of the world famous Tower Bridge, a mere mile and a half from where I live. |
| | What you can expect. I could certainly write tips here about the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Piccadilly Circus and so on. I have no intention of doing that. Any guide book in the world and literally thousands of websites will do that for you, undoubteldy better than I can. There really is no point in my trying to recreate what professional writers and photographers do so well.
What I would like to do is offer a more personalised approach, things ignored by the mainstream publications and sites. Backstreet pubs, small local restaurants, unvisited memorials, that sort of thing. Time was always against me, but having recently taken early retirement, I hope to do a lot more on VT. Again, an open invite to contact me for information, I will be only too glad to help.
Just to show what I mean, as a random photo, here is one of the Moonwalk, an annual night time sponsored walk in aid of breast cancer. Just one of the amazing things you will find in this wonderful city. |

| Pros: | "Nightlife, plenty to do and see, international city with a huge history." | | Cons: | "Crime / drugs, beggars, cost (especially accommodation), rip off merchants (especially minicabs)." | | In A Nutshell: | "It's not much, but I like to call it home!" |

nicolaitan Wed Sep 16, 2009 16:34 UTC when i think of " who knows where the time goes " i tend to think of judy collins. sure looks like a turtle to me, nice size too. | breughel Fri Aug 7, 2009 18:30 UTC Much liked your "artistically not correct" tip about Tate Modern. It seems I did well to miss the Tate boat and avoid some "garbage art". I also ignored that Monet belongs to the contemporary art movement; never too old to learn! | jo104 Thu Jul 23, 2009 17:45 UTC love your new travelougue have you been to Wapping Pwer station they have turned it into a restaurant (wasn't that good when I went) but they have left parts of the plant as an artistic display. | angiebabe Mon Jul 20, 2009 18:57 UTC I dont know where or what page I left a comment for you on Sat when I got home - but I will come back and have a look at yr pg here but otherwise again great meeting you on Sat and hope to see you again b4 too long (around the east end an xlnt idea!) |
